Our Project

The Hate Free Initiative

Hate group recruitment and propaganda tactics have easily adapted to online platforms. These groups seek to attract lonely, angry people by offering a sense of belonging. In times of economic hardship, nationalists and fascists use stereotypes to identify marginalized communities as unwanted threats in order to normalize violence.

We believe education and information dissemination are essential to stopping the spread of intolerance. Our first step is researching hate, how it happens, how media is a tool to dehumanize certain populations, and how those same tools can be used for rehumanization.

Research by The Peace Project

In the United States, NGO’s and government agencies are in agreement that recruitment and instigation for acts of domestic terror is increasingly perpetrated online. The debate sits at the center of issues like censorship, free speech, and private data collection, issues that spark much more disagreement on what course of action government and social media companies should take. Neo-Nazi groups have grown by 22% in the US since 2016, exacerbating increases in anti-Semitism. Anti-Muslim hate groups have grown by 300% in the US since 2015. We believe that technology and social media have played a key role in this increase, streamlining the spread of misinformation in the modern era. The role of social media in this process has grown to encompass at least 90% of domestic extremism.
